heat wave

Feb. 18th, 2007 08:54 am
last night was interesting.

i had a knock on the door around 8:00pm. when i opened the door i could smell the distinct odor of natural gas, and it was a columbia gas person. he said that we seemed to have a leak, and he would have to shut off the gas to find it. considering my heat, stove, and water tank all run on gas this wasn't pleasant news to hear. about 9:00pm he comes back and tells me that i'm ok, and another apartment are ok, but he's left the gas shut off to the other two because he can't pinpoint the problem. So then I wait and wait for my heat to kick on. and it doesn't. so i turn the furnace off, let it set for 10 minutes, the turn it back on- i can hear it click on, but it's not catching. now i realize that the pilot light probably isn't working, but i have no knowledge of how to light it, and i make it a policy to not mess with gas appliances unless i know what i'm doing. so i call the emergency number for my landlord and leave a message. i really wanted to go to bed early so i could get up this morning and do some work. i finally go to bed about 10:40pm or so. it was 56 degrees in my bedroom when i went to bed. something after 11pm, i'm awakened by this loud banging outside my window- i look out and i see another columbia gas person working on the meters. i got up and redressed and waited until he came back in then i asked him to look at my furnace. sure enough the pilot needed lit so he did that for me. he also told me that my furnace was hooked up illegally and he should shut the gas off to it, but he wouldn't since his work order didn't include my apartment number. he just asked that i contact my landlord about it. i called the emergency number back and left another message telling them that i got the furnace problem fixed.

now i'll have to call the rental place on monday and let them know about the furnace- basically the ran a flexible hose into the furnace in such a way that it can rub and get a hole in it. not good for a hose delivering gas into a flame.

you know there's a big difference in 56 degrees and 60 degrees.
