So I've been mulling on the sermon this past week quite a bit.
It was based on John 3:16. My pastor used this to discuss the reason that Jesus died on he cross. He basically said that Jesus didn't die as God's requirement to cleanse humans of their sins, but he died because of our (humans) requirement for God to prove His love for us. That God had to literally bleed before we would believe He loved us. I'm not sure how i feel about that. It certainly turns the theology I was taught on its head. The tenet of the evangelical christian faith is that we are separated from God by sin and it is only through the blood of Christ are we cleansed of that sin and can enter into communion with God. I consider myself pretty wide open when it comes to religious theology, but even I found it weird my pastor would say that from the pulpit.
Any thoughts from LJ land?
